Surprise! Bayern basketball players fly out of the cup

This is a big surprise! Like last year, the big favorite Bayern Munich missed the basketball cup final. The first title of the season is gone.

Favorite Bayern Munich was surprisingly eliminated in the semi-finals of the top four for the Basketball Bundesliga Cup. The German champions lost in the SAP Garden at home against the BMA 365 Bamberg Baskets after overtime with 97:103 (83:83, 36:34) and, like last year, missed out on their first title of the season. The best thrower for the Franks was Ibi Watson with 24 points, for the Bavarians Nenad Dimitrijevic also had 24 points.

Alba Berlin and EWE Baskets Oldenburg will meet in the second semi-final at 7 p.m. (Dyn/rbb). The final takes place on Sunday (4.30 p.m./Dyn/BR).

Hainer demands reparations

Last year, Bayern also surprisingly failed in the semifinals against Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels. This is also why those responsible in Munich formulated the cup title as a clear goal for the season this time and did everything they could to ensure that the finals took place in Munich. The league had actually already assigned the event to Düsseldorf.

“I make no secret of the fact that it was a huge disappointment for us last year,” said Bayern President Herbert Hainer before the game on the streaming service Dyn. This needs to be “repaired” this weekend.

Bavaria without rhythm

But Bayern struggled from the start, despite their home advantage. Veteran coach Svetislav Pesic’s team didn’t want to develop a rhythm. At least the defense of the German champions worked so that the hosts were two points ahead at the break (36:34).

After the break it seemed as if Bayern were getting the game under control. The Munich team moved ahead to seven points, but Bamberg couldn’t be shaken off. The Franconians managed to equalize and were even slightly ahead before the last quarter (54:53).

Obst takes over, Bamberg counters

Things remained exciting in the final period before Andreas Obst seemingly put Bayern on the road to victory with seven points in a row. But Bamberg came back and led by six points (80:74) two minutes before the end. Bayern saved themselves into extra time, where both teams converted one three-point shot after the other. But Bamberg now remained stable and managed the big surprise.
