“I have successfully ruined my character in politics”

His childhood, his political career, Germany’s ability to defend itself: Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg does not avoid any topic in the “Machtmenschen” podcast. And he asks himself: What was the biggest stupidity of his life?

What moves someone who says: “I have successfully ruined my character in politics?” FOCUS editor-in-chief Franziska Reich meets the former German defense and economics minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.

They talk about pressing questions of our time: What happens when Europe can no longer rely on America? Why aren’t billions alone enough for real defense capability? And how dangerous is it when the wrong people hold the reins of power?

It’s also about the suspension of compulsory military service, Guttenberg’s harshest sentences to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and a life between Burg, Berlin and New York.

Guttenberg grew up with his father and not his mother because his grandparents decided that way. This injustice still concerns him today. His father: a “bizarre” and loving artist soul. And Guttenberg himself: a politician who was at his peak at the age of 37, but who felt mercilessly overestimated – and who today, as he himself says, is more relaxed than ever before. His biggest vice? Listen in.

In “Power People”, FOCUS editor-in-chief Franziska Reich speaks every week with those who shape our country: politicians, MPs, strategists and insiders. It’s about more than headlines: about the human side of power, about responsibility, doubt and the price of political influence.

What drives those in power? How do decisions really come about? And how can politicians regain the trust of voters?

From November 7th, every Friday – everywhere there are podcasts.
