“My life wasn’t as difficult as others have it”

It was his first public appearance since the suicide attempt last year: Former Trigema boss Wolfgang Grupp appeared in the “Gysis Encounters” talk series at the New Art Museum in Tübingen.

The host was the left-wing politician Gregor Gysi. The Monday evening began with a casual exchange of blows. “I always dress for who I’m with. And I dressed for you today,” said Group with a wink in the direction of Gysi. He countered with a laugh: “But I think you’ve been wearing the same suit for forty years.” Grupp took it with humor: “Something like that. That’s the Swabian way.”

Group: “Don’t leave the house without being in the house band”

Later things became more serious. Grupp spoke about his faith and his personal attitude: “I’m a Catholic, I’m also a devout Catholic. I built my own chapel when I built my house. And I’ll tell you quite frankly, I don’t leave the house in the morning without spending a moment in my chapel and at least reflecting on myself. So that you don’t get arrogant and, say a few words of thanks for the fact that, in principle, you didn’t have such a bad life. I mean, So I have to admit that my life may not have been as difficult as some others may have had it.”

Hospitalization after suicide attempt

Grupp himself made his suicide attempt on July 7, 2025 public. At that time he was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds. In one Letter to the Trigema staff On July 17, 2025 he wrote that he was suffering from old age depression. The appearance in Tübingen now marks his return to the public.
