On Thursday evening, Markus Lanz discussed the topics of defense, military service and war on his ZDF talk show.
At the end of the series, the moderator asked Left-wing politician Jan van Aken a direct question: “Would you be willing, for example, to pick up a gun and defend this country for your grandchildren?” The politician’s answer was surprisingly honest.
Van Aken: “Flight is a good reflex”
Jan van Aken, former member of the Bundestag Leftadmitted that he couldn’t imagine picking up a gun. “I don’t think so. But no one knows what the actual situation is. At the moment I definitely don’t believe that,” explained the politician. Instead, escape is a possible option for him and his family: “Yes. Escape is also a good reflex.”
For van Aken, the safety of his family is top priority. He emphasized that he would not fight for the country, but for “our security.” He defines “our” more broadly than just his family. “At the moment I can’t imagine with that weapon to fight for this country,” said the left-wing politician.
