Bank employees become suspicious

In the following weeks, additional callers came forward pretending to be prosecutors, judges or bank employees. The 84-year-old followed telephone instructions several times and handed over a total of around 300,000 euros, the police said.

The fraud was only discovered last Friday (March 6th) when the senior citizen wanted to take out a mortgage from her bank in order to be able to make further payments. Bank employees then called the police. The police warned again about the fraud: Neither the police nor the public prosecutor’s office asked about assets on the phone. They also do not accept cash, jewelry or gold for “safekeeping.”
