Gardener advises: Flower bulbs in your garden need tomato fertilizer in spring

Tulips, daffodils and crocuses need nutrients. A perennial expert explains when to fertilize the plants and why tomato fertilizer is the best choice.

Many flower bulbs make their big appearance in spring. That’s why they should get your attention right now. “Everything that comes out of the ground in terms of green onion leaves now needs a supply of nutrients,” says Svenja Schwedtke. The perennial gardener advises: While early bloomers like Tulips and Daffodils To sprout, the flower bulbs need a portion of fertilizer – ideally by mid-March.

This is also important for the following years: If you fertilize flower bulbs in spring, you are laying the foundation for them to bloom again the next year. For them, the fertilizer is like food and “without food they starve,” says Schwedtke.

This doesn’t just apply to large-flowered plants such as tulips, daffodils and ornamental onions. The larger the flower, the higher the nutrient requirement – but squills and crocuses also appreciate a handful of fertilizer.
