Mayor no longer runs and wins absolute majority

The incumbent mayor of the municipality of Philippsreut in the Bavarian Forest (Freyung-Grafenau district) was re-elected with 57.1 percent of the vote – even though Helmut Knaus was no longer running.

However, according to preliminary results, 216 voters wrote his name on the ballot paper.

When asked by the PNP, Knaus said he would accept the election. He expected to win the election – but not with an absolute majority.

Knaus told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” in February: “I want to retire now.” He has been in office since 2014. There are 521 eligible voters in the community and the voter turnout was 79.7 percent.
