“I really hope that this decision makes that clear,” the 67-year-old explained his move. “A decision that has definitely not been easy for me as a Bayern fan since childhood.”

90,000 euros for social purposes

Reiter is thus ending a position on the administrative advisory board of the football record champions that lasted several years and the position on the supervisory board that he recently assumed. The criticism was sparked by his handling of the mandates and the associated remuneration. Reiter has now announced that he does not want to keep this income. Since 2021, he has received 90,000 euros due to his membership in the administrative advisory board, which he has also duly taxed every year. He now wants to donate this entire amount to social projects.

Shortly before the election, Reiter admitted that he had been receiving 20,000 euros a year for his voluntary work on FC Bayern’s administrative advisory board for some time. He was not aware that the city council would have had to approve this, explained Reiter, who has been mayor of the state capital for twelve years and manages a budget of nine billion euros.

Reiter: The people of Munich wanted a clear decision

“In the last few days it has become very clear to me – and the people of Munich have also made it clear to me – that I have to make a clear and undoubted decision here,” said Reiter. “That is why I have informed the association that I am renouncing both my supervisory board mandate and my position as chairman of the administrative advisory board with immediate effect. This also includes membership in the administrative advisory board, which I also waive.”

In the local elections on Sunday, Reiter probably suffered heavy losses because of this debate, while the Green candidate Dominik Krause triumphed. Reiter now has to compete against the 35-year-old in a runoff election on March 22nd. “I have made one or two mistakes in the last two weeks,” Reiter said in a brief statement after the results were announced.
