At the weekend, a cold front brings an unusually large amount of snow to Germany – in the middle of spring. It can snow heavily, especially at higher altitudes and in the Alps.
However, the Snow in many places it doesn’t last long. Meteorologist Jan Schenk explains this in the weather talk with FOCUS online.
Snowfall is moving south from the low mountain ranges
First, a rain front will move through on Friday before the snowfall line drops on Saturday night. “Then we’ll see how it slowly starts to turn into snowfall on Saturday night. At around 500, 600 meters,” says Schenk. The low mountain ranges such as the Eifel, Bergisches Land and Westerwald are initially affected. During Saturday the snowfall will shift further south. “On Saturday morning it settles down Alps and it could snow there all Saturday,” said the meteorologist.
Considerable quantities are possible for the Alpine regions. “You’re a little surprised when you look at the amount of snow. You think: ‘Hey, we’re in spring,'” says Schenk. In total, up to 30 centimeters of snow could accumulate there.

Freezing moisture possible on the streets
However, in many regions the snow will disappear quickly. “It’s a lot of wet snow, it’s very warm and we have wind – these are all reasons why this snow is melting away again,” explains Schenk. He expects a blanket of snow, especially in the south on the edge of the Alps, for example in the Allgäu or around Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
However, the weather is not without risk: “There could also be something like freezing wet,” warns Schenk. Drivers should therefore pay attention to possible slippery conditions, particularly at night and early in the morning.
