Many people consider modern messengers to be a guarantee of confidential communication. Services like Signal or WhatsApp rely on strong end-to-end encryption and protect messages very reliably from a technical point of view. Nevertheless, security authorities are currently warning about new attack methods.
According to Dutch intelligence services, Russian actors are currently trying to access the accounts of government employees, military personnel and journalists around the world. The encryption of the messengers is not broken. Instead, people themselves become the gateway.

Russians attack WhatsApp users with social engineering
The attacks follow a pattern that has been known in cybersecurity for years. Cybercriminals use social engineering. They deliberately manipulate people so that they themselves reveal sensitive information. In the current case, attackers pose as technical support, for example or fake security problems. The goal is to get users to share a verification code or confirm a device link.
Messenger services often allow one account to be used on multiple devices. If such a link is set up, the attacker can read messages. To the victim, the process often looks like a harmless confirmation. However, this actually authorizes another device on which the communication is completely mirrored.
Compromised messenger communication can have serious consequences for journalists, government officials or political decision-makers: confidential conversations are read, contacts become visible and strategies can be recognized at an early stage. Such information is extremely valuable in geopolitical conflicts.
Technical security alone is not enough
The current development does not mean that encrypted messengers are unsafe. On the contrary: the technical security of these services continues to be an important component of modern communication. Encryption prevents messages from being intercepted while on the move or being read by platform operators.
But technical security alone is not enough. Digital communication always requires an awareness of operational security. Users need to understand how their accounts work, what security mechanisms are in place, and which requests may be suspicious.
What WhatsApp users should pay attention to
In practice, a few simple rules help. Verification codes should never be shared with anyone else. Support requests within chats should generally be viewed critically. You should also regularly check which devices are linked to a messenger account.
The much-cited device hygiene also plays an important role. Operating systems and apps should be kept up to date, and unknown links or files should be treated with caution. A clear separation between private and work devices is also recommended, especially in sensitive professional contexts.
Security is more than encryption
The warning from the Dutch intelligence services shows a fundamental pattern of modern cyberattacks. Instead of relying on spectacular technical exploits, attackers are increasingly using psychological manipulation. This method is scalable, comparatively inexpensive and often surprisingly effective.
Digital security therefore arises from an interaction of several factors. Strong encryption forms the technical foundation. But only attention, training and a critical approach to unusual requests make communication truly resilient. Anyone who uses secure messengers should therefore be aware: technology can protect a lot, but it cannot replace people.
