Rain turns to snow: From Friday a front will move across Germany, bringing massive snowfall from 400 meters onwards. Smoothness is inevitable.
One will draw from Friday Rain front over Germanywhich will settle in the Alps until Saturday evening. The rain turns into snowfall, especially on Saturday night. Regions such as the Eifel, the Kahle Asten, the Kassel Mountains and the Brocken are affected from a height of 400 meters. In addition, there will be widespread squalls with speeds of up to 80 km/h on Friday afternoon.
The snowfall is mainly concentrated in the low mountain ranges. Below 400 meters, sleet is to be expected. On Saturday, many western low mountain ranges will be covered by a blanket of snow, at least temporarily. Particularly heavy snowfalls are expected in the western Eifel.
It will also snow heavily on Saturday in the Black Forest and on the edge of the Alps, with the Allgäu region likely to be particularly affected.
Up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow possible
The expected amounts of snow are considerable: up to 30 centimeters of wet snow can fall in stagnant areas, while even larger amounts are possible in high mountains.
The snowfall spreads further south and meets moist Mediterranean air in northern Italy. This leads to intense snowfall between Zermatt and Turin, where up to one meter of fresh snow is possible in the high Alps within 24 hours.
In Germany, the snow will melt again quickly in most regions. Only in the Schneifel, in the Allgäu and possibly in the Upper Black Forest could a snow cover of up to 10 centimeters last until Monday or Tuesday.
Danger due to freezing moisture
However, the greatest danger is on the roads: there is a threat of snow and sleet on Saturday night, especially in the west and southwest of Germany. As temperatures fall, freezing water occurs, which also affects the lowlands. Morning frost and slippery roads are therefore a serious problem on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
In addition, the danger of avalanches in the Alps could increase significantly due to the intense snowfall. Travelers between Switzerland and Italy should expect delays.
From next week it will slowly get warmer from the west again, so the winter conditions should ease.
