The discussion about Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern has been reignited. This is mainly due to Honorary President Uli Hoeneß.
Reports have been circulating again since the middle of the week that Max Eberl has to fight for his future at FC Bayern. The sports director himself reacts to this in a demonstratively calm manner.
According to “Sport Bild” The chances of a contract extension are currently 50 percent. Eberl’s future at FC Bayern is therefore “more open than ever”.
According to information from “Sport1”, Eberl would like to continue his path at FC Bayern beyond the end of his current contract. This currently runs until summer 2027.
“Since I’ve been at FC Bayern, I’ve had to deal with criticism – in whatever form, in different ways,” says Eberl himself. He continues to let the discussions about himself slide away.
Hoeneß remains one of Max Eberl’s biggest critics
But there are still critical voices within the club – especially Uli Hoeneß. The honorary president had already publicly expressed doubts about Eberl’s way of working in September 2025.
At that time, Hoeneß particularly criticized the fact that important decisions were not always sufficiently coordinated with the supervisory board. “We are a billion-dollar store. And it would also be good for Max if he finally understood that such things can be spread across several shoulders,” Hoeneß explained at the time in the “Sport1” one-two.
This assessment seems almost surprising when you consider the criticism from last year. At that time, the sports director was under significantly more pressure.

The internal tensions apparently also have an impact on specific sporting issues. An example of this is Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension.
According to information from “Sport1”, Eberl is said to have reached an agreement in principle with the central defender in the spring of 2025. However, the supervisory board slowed down the negotiations.

The talks were then initially put on hold and only resumed in the autumn. In the meantime, Upamecano had further increased his performance – and thus also increased his market value. In the end, the extension became significantly more expensive for FC Bayern.
Interestingly, Eberl is receiving indirect support from a former Bayern boss in the current discussion.
Eberl focuses on sporting success at FC Bayern
Eberl himself is currently trying to focus on sports. From his point of view, FC Bayern is currently in a good starting position. “I think we’re not doing so badly. We have a team that’s fun. We have the opportunity to achieve a lot this year,” emphasized the sports director.
In the end, however, the club management will decide what happens next. A final decision on Eberl’s future is expected to be made at one of the next supervisory board meetings in the summer.
