Bayern drew 1-1 at Leverkusen in a wild game on Saturday. The game provided the following insights:

1. Jackson tears everything down again

The eleven-on-eleven comparison between Leverkusen and Bayern was over after 42 minutes. Nicolas Jackson kicked Martin Terrier in the ankle with an open sole and received a red card.

At this point and somewhere in midfield, the foul was simply unnecessary. Because of the loan striker’s stupid move, Bayern had to play outnumbered for more than half of the game.

The very expensive loan of the Senegalese from Chelsea was viewed critically from the start. In the last two games against Mönchengladbach and in Bergamo, Jackson was able to convince and received a lot of praise. With his extremely unwise red card in Leverkusen, the 24-year-old has torn back what he had recently built up with good performances.

2. Bayern have to be warned – with a view to the cup game

The game provided numerous stories and excitement. Above all, the two disallowed Bayern goals and the sending off for an alleged swallow for Luis Diaz caused anger for the record champions – and their fans. All the hustle and bustle can obscure the realization that Leverkusen had Bayern close to defeat.

Especially in the first half – when Bayern were still full – the Werkself caused real problems for the league leaders. Leverkusen played aggressively, pressed high and set dangerous pinpricks offensively. In stoppage time, coach Kasper Hjulmand’s team even celebrated the supposed winning goal, but the goal was disallowed due to Jonas Hofmann’s very close offside position.

Bayern struggled at times in Leverkusen. Coach Vincent Kompany’s team is actually no longer used to that. In the end they dominated the opponents in rows, like for example at the 6:1 master class in Bergamo.

Of course, FC Bayern came to the BayArena with a comfortable lead at the top of the table, so you can also switch to administration mode. Nevertheless, Bayern have to be warned: On April 22nd, the Munich team has to go to Leverkusen again, then in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup.

The record cup winners want to reach the final again after many years, but Leverkusen have now proven that they can be a threat to Bayern. A game under floodlights and all-or-nothing conditions will be a different situation for both teams. But Leverkusen have shown that the team certainly has the potential to make Bayern’s treble dream shattered.

3. Ulreich becomes a hero

Jackson was clearly the loser of the game, while the big hero was in the Bayern goal. After a long time, Sven Ulreich guarded the FCB goal again from the start because Manuel Neuer and Jonas Urbig were unavailable due to injuries. And Ulreich showed an outstanding performance for FC Bayern.

The 37-year-old made several strong saves and saved the point for Bayern with a world-class save in stoppage time against Ibrahim Maza. After the game, he was rightly celebrated in the corner by the team and the fans who had traveled with him.

Nevertheless there is new goalkeeping worries for Bayern. After the game, Ulreich explained that he felt something in his thigh. Towards the end of the game he was no longer able to take the goal kicks himself.

Before the second leg against Bergamo next Wednesday, Bayern have to hope that Ulreich doesn’t have anything worse. Or that Neuer or Urbig can return against the Italians. In Leverkusen, Ulreich definitely proved that he can be relied on in emergencies.
