Instead of the turquoise blue sea, brown tides currently dominate the image of Hawaii. Mass water pushes through streets and residential areas. Many people had to leave their homes hastily.
The situation was triggered by a so-called “Kona low”, which affected the islands in particular MolokaiMaui and O’ahu. After persistent rainfall in the previous weeks, the soil is already saturated – new water can hardly be absorbed.
So far no missing people or fatalities
The effects are significant: numerous roads are impassable and tens of thousands of households are without one Electricityrescue workers in constant use. Despite the dramatic situation, the authorities have so far spoken of the situation as being relatively benign – no fatalities or missing persons are currently known.
However, there is no improvement in the situation in sight, as meteorologists warn of further heavy rain in the coming days.
