After counting 553 of 926 electoral districts, 35-year-old Krause received 59.4 percent of the vote. Incumbent Dieter Reiter (SPD) only achieved 40.6 percent. There was cheering at the Green Party’s election party when the first trend became known.

The election is more exciting than it has been in Munich for decades. For a long time, incumbent Reiter was considered the undisputed favorite. But then it became known that he had been receiving money from FC Bayern Munich for a position on its administrative advisory board for years and had not had this approved by the city council – as he should have done. Reiter came under massive criticism, especially because of his handling of it.
