Anna (28) explains what she earns as a tax officer


28-year-old Anna works as a tax officer in North Rhine-Westphalia. In an episode of the series “Is it worth it?” from Bayerischer Rundfunk she tells us how much she earns monthly and what her everyday working life is like.

So much in advance: “The biggest prejudice is that civil servants don’t work and drink coffee all day. That would be nice, but unfortunately that’s not the case.”

This is how much the tax officer earns

“As civil servant “You have a very secure job in financial administration,” says Anna. She is classified as a senior tax officer in salary group A9, level 4. Her gross monthly salary is 3,449 euros. In addition, she receives a structural allowance of 114 euros. She has around 3,018 euros left net. Since she has private health insurance due to her status as a civil servant, she pays 346 euros per month for the insurance. In the end, she is left with around 3,018 euros 2672 euros. In 2025 her annual gross salary was 42,575 euros.

Everyday work in financial administration

Anna’s working day starts at 8 a.m. “My job is to assess taxes, i.e. to process tax returns,” she explains. An important part of her job is contact with citizens. “I’ve also had phone calls where citizens were crying. It’s emotional, but I then try to mediate and help.” When people disagree with their tax assessment, documents are missing or they have their Steer If you can’t pay, Anna also takes care of these cases. “These are real people with real fates. I always try to have empathy. It’s important to me to help people.”

Despite the routine work, Anna enjoys the job. “It’s all about the right attitude and how much fun you can have. At the end of the day, it’s a Office job. If you approach it with motivation, you can have fun with it.” The tax officer particularly enjoys the small tasks. “The first time I stamped, I was very excited. I was afraid of doing something wrong, even though you can’t do anything wrong. But it was a special feeling. I thought to myself: I’ve done it. I can stamp now.”

Anna’s expenses

Anna lives with her boyfriend in a 57 square meter apartment in downtown Bielefeld. Your share of the rent is 470 euros per month. She spends around 300 euros a month on mobility. The tax officer works 41 hours per week. “Today I released six tax returns, made three estimates and processed all the mail. That’s a bit small for one day, but still within limits,” explains the 28-year-old. After work, Anna devotes herself to her hobby, dancing. She trains three times a week after work. She is satisfied with her life. “I have my dream life. I have a secure, exciting job and enough time to live my life outside of my job.”
