Because expensive! German ice cream “cheapest in Europe”

The prices at the ice cream counter are a recurring topic. Compared to other European countries, a scoop of ice cream is still affordable in Germany, according to the Association of Italian Ice Cream Manufacturers (Uniteis).

“We are the cheapest in Europe,” said Uniteis President Augusto De Pellegrin. This year the ball costs on average between 1.80 and 2.50 euros, he estimated at the presentation of the ice cream flavor of the year, Pinocchio, in the Berlin ice cream parlor “Caffè e Gelato”. In Italy or Spain, for example, it is not uncommon to pay 3 euros per ball.

Many people still compare the cost of a scoop of ice cream today with the prices 30 or 40 years ago, when the scoop cost 70 or 80 pfennigs. Back then, a liter of gasoline only cost about half as much as it does today, counters De Pellegrin. Overall, the cost of living is higher today than it used to be.

Fresh preparation and good ingredients

At “Caffè e Gelato” on Potsdamer Platz, the scoop costs between 2.50 and 3 euros, depending on the variety. The shop offers 36 flavors in the summer, all always freshly made – that’s the be-all and end-all for good ice cream, says ice cream maker Fabio Cividino. And of course good ingredients.

The quality of the ice cream in Germany is particularly good, says De Pellegrin. “We work like before.” The many owner-operated ones Ice cream parlors craftsmanship and passion are important. “I believe we are the keepers of tradition.” De Pellegrin is the third generation to run an ice cream parlor in Kulmbach, Franconia.

Ice Association: Ball price cheap compared to Europe

The ice cream flavor of 2026 “Pinocchio” will be presented in the ice cream cafe “Caffe e Gelato” on Potsdamer Platz. It is a creation of fine milk ice cream with strawberry sorbet and a wafer roll that symbolizes Pinocchio’s nose. On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Carlo Collodi, the creator of this literary character, the ice cream flavor of the year is dedicated to the legendary wooden doll. For the 200th anniversary: Pinocchio is ice cream flavor of the year

The ice cream flavor of the year called Pinocchio is a melange of milk ice cream and strawberry sorbet, decorated with breadsticks or small waffles dipped in chocolate. The ice cream specialists chose the name because the Italian writer Carlo Collodi and inventor of the famous children’s book character Pinocchio would have turned 200 this year. Every year Uniteis chooses a different creation.
