Munich Mayor Reiter is on sick leave, Krause takes over immediately

Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) is probably on sick leave after the election debacle. According to information from the “Münchner Merkur” he will not be returning to his office for the time being. His successor Dominik Krause takes over.

Krause (Alliance 90/The Greens) has previously been second mayor. He had previously represented the 67-year-old rider on several occasions.

Reiter has already announced the end of his political career

Munich’s long-time mayor had already announced on election evening: “Today is the last day of my political career.” According to the report, Reiter is on sick leave until further notice. It is still unclear whether and when he will return.

Krause will take over as his deputy with immediate effect. He will not be in office as mayor until May 1st.

Reiter took the blame for the election defeat with clear words: “I screwed up.” The election result was his fault, he emphasized. “It was an honor to be the mayor of this city.” Reiter, who ruled Munich for 12 years, announced the end of his political career: “That’s it from me.”

Reiter was recently criticized for his handling of club mandates at FC Bayern Munich, including remuneration. The SPD politician, who entered the race as the overwhelming favorite, had to lose points in the first round of voting.
