On Friday morning the wooden frame was with the inscription “Work makes you free” found in front of the tax office on Pfarrkirchener Straße. The side parts of the gate are said to have been made up of several swastikas. Even the detail of the upside down letter “B” from the original gate of the Auschwitz 1 concentration camp the perpetrator took into account.

The gate was built over a sign indicating a disabled parking space. This is a shocking event, especially in connection with concentration camps in which disabled people were also deliberately murdered.

The gate was dismantled on site by the police. “It was seized and is now being examined forensically,” says Police Commissioner Lisa Gibis from the Lower Bavaria Police Headquarters in Straubing, according to “Bild”. The officers secured fingerprints from the painted wood and the structure used to hold the gate in place.

Perplexity after incident with concentration camp gate: “It came out of the blue”

In Eggenfelden there is helplessness after the scandal. It is said that there have been no incidents in the recent past that would indicate a perpetrator. “It came like a bolt from the blue,” says Mayor Martin Biber to “Bild”. “We have no suspicion of who might have done this.”

Marlene Schönberger, member of the Bundestag from Alliance 90/The Greens from the Rottal-Inn district, condemns the incident “deeply. The perpetrators must have put a lot of effort into producing and erecting the structure,” she told Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Concentration camp gate recreated: perpetrator faces trouble for sedition

The perpetrator now faces charges of sedition. The saying “Work sets you free” is not fundamentally forbidden in Germany. In connection with the Nazi ideology, i.e. the incorporated swastikas, there is incitement to hatred. The police are also investigating the use of anti-constitutional symbols.

The Passau Criminal Investigation Department took over the investigation. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the Pfarrkirchener Straße area in Eggenfelden on the night of Thursday to Friday is asked to contact the Passau Police Department on 0851/9511-0.
