AfD politician Thomas Mayr loses mayoral election in Landau an der Isar and emigrates to Egypt with his family

The AfD politician Thomas Mayr wanted to become mayor of Landau an der Isar in Bavaria. Nothing came of it. He is now emigrating to Egypt with his family.

The family has already purchased a condominium in the Egyptian coastal city and the move is planned for the end of May. A buyer should already be available for the family’s previous home in Landau. The family wants to deregister in Germany from May 31st. Mayr declared his political career over.

Mayr only received 7.0 percent of the vote in the election two weeks ago and thus clearly missed out on making it into the runoff. Incumbent Matthias Kohlmayer secured victory.

The family’s move had already been decided. If he won the election, the 51-year-old had planned to stay alone in Landau and get a rented apartment. “If I had been elected mayor, I would of course have taken office. My wife and son would then have moved to Egypt. But since I haven’t been elected, I’m going with you,” Mayr told the “idowa” portal.

AfD politician emigrates to his wife for love

Mayr bases his decision primarily on his wife’s health. The Egyptian climate is noticeably good for her: “Two weeks in Egypt – and she’s doing well. That’s important for my wife – and my wife is important to me.”

Although Mayr won a seat in the district council, he will not accept the mandate. He doesn’t think it makes sense to stay in Bavaria just for the meetings if his future focus will be in North Africa.

New beginning in Hurghada: writing instead of an IT job

Mayr is also repositioning herself professionally. According to his own statements, he quit his job at a large IT service provider in Germany. In the future he wants to devote more time to writing. “I still have several books in the pipeline,” he says. He could also imagine writing a book about emigration.
