A winter weather change is imminent in Germany. Snowfall will begin on Wednesday evening and spread until Friday. There will also be more snow this weekend.
Wintry conditions will continue into the new week. Particularly important: smoothness becomes a problem, even in rush hour traffic.
“The snowfall really starts on Wednesday evening,” says meteorologist Jan Schenk in the weather talk with FOCUS online. Initially it snows at higher altitudes, but the snow line drops quickly. “Later up to 600 meters. It could even go down to 500 meters.”
Lots of fresh snow in the mountains
Even if heavy snowfall is expected in some areas, little will remain in many regions. “You can see the snowflakes, maybe even thick snowflakes, but there isn’t really much left behind,” said Schenk.
Things look different at higher altitudes. Especially in the Alps and low mountain ranges, a blanket of snow can form. Up to one meter of fresh snow falls in the mountains, says Schenk.

Smoothness through freezing wetness
The biggest risk is not that Snow itself, but smoothness due to freezing wetness. As the temperature drops, the values in many places fall into the frost range.
“Wherever it is wet, and that is basically everywhere, there can be freezing wetness,” warns Schenk. The south and center of Germany are particularly affected.
The situation remains tense at the beginning of next week: “It could get slippery again, especially in the center and in the south.”
Severe frost at higher altitudes
With the cold front, temperatures will drop noticeably. At higher altitudes it even gets very cold. “Minus 13 degrees in Garmisch-Partenkirchen over fresh snow,” says Schenk.
