The Van Reempts family is traveling in a camper in Argentina with their four children. Then in mid-February an error message comes with a clear message that the vehicle needs to go to the workshop. This is where the challenge begins for the family: “Nobody here can solve the error code,” Anton Van Reempts told the Belgian newspaper “HLN“.

“One workshop sent us to another. Even Bosch Engineering couldn’t help us, even though the car’s computer is from Bosch,” the father explains. In the provincial capital Salta in the northwest of the South American country, several technicians with different service equipment looked at the car, according to “HLN”. There was no solution in sight.

Family stuck in Argentina with camper

One mechanic reportedly said, “I’ll solve your problem, no matter how long it takes.” In addition, he is said to have purchased additional licenses, but this didn’t help either. The camper currently has limited performance. The family has already contacted Belgium and Germany with the aim of gaining access to the car’s computer.

The family is said to have an email from MAN stating that they should drive to a VW factory about 867 kilometers away. It is unclear whether this is safe and can be done successfully with the car.

The family actually wanted to spend more time with the children. But now the parents are trying to clarify the situation: “If they ask something, we say: ‘Not yet, we’re busy’. That’s exactly what we wanted to escape from,” the father tells “HLN”. The actual destination of the trip is Buenos Aires. From there the camper should be sent back to Belgium.

It is important to have the vehicle checked again before the trip and to carry out any repairs, he advises ADAC. The experts also recommend that travelers take important spare parts such as a spare wheel, a water pump or seals with them. The general inspection and the gas system should also be carried out or checked.
