In the “Maybrit Illner” panel on the topic “War in Iran – limitless threat?” It became clear on Thursday evening how great the concern is about geopolitical deals and further escalation.
The German-Iranian journalist Michel Abdollahi focused primarily on the mood in the country Iran itself – and brought a possible point in time for new protests into play: the Tuesday before the Iranian New Year on March 20th.
“What I’m being told is that we’re actually just waiting to be told, ‘Get back on the streets,’ so that we can be freed from this system because we want to breathe. We want to live,” explains the journalist.
Fireproof as a trigger
Many young people are on the streets during the traditional fire festival – a day that in Iran repeatedly led to unrest.
“The last Tuesday before the end of the year, that’s Tuesday next week, it’s something like New Year’s Eve. There’s jumping over fires and people celebrating. It’s a day that has always led to unrest in Iran because people there do a little bit what they want. There’s banging, there’s celebrating, and the young people are on the streets. It could be that when people take to the streets on that day to let out their anger, something will happen there. So it could be “That all of this didn’t happen as unintentionally as we think,” said Abdollahi.
