Friedrich Merz will once again pay the US President a visit to the White House on Tuesday. The focus will probably be on the Iran war. The Chancellor should not bring up international law in front of the US President, says US expert Josef Braml.
Braml: “Merz will be a marginal figure for Trump”
Is there a risk that the Chancellor in Washington will be reduced to an extra while Trump continues to orchestrate the Iran war? Braml is certain that “everyone who is in a room with Trump will be reduced to an extra.”
For Merz, this specifically means: “Trump is a narcissist who draws everyone’s attention to himself. Merz will probably experience the same fate as his last visit – that he is a marginal figure and that the issues that are important to us don’t really interest Americans.”

With regard to the already tense trade relationship with the USA, Merz has “a difficult balancing act” ahead of him, says Braml. In terms of domestic policy, he must ensure that the peace in the coalition is maintained. “There are actors like Mr. Mützenich who uphold international law, but if Merz were to mention this to Trump, then he would be holding a red flag to a cop. So that wouldn’t be wise.”
