Damage to houses: Videos show meteor over Germany


A meteorite passed over West Germany on Sunday evening. Pictures and videos showed the luminous body. Parts fell in Rhineland-Palatinate and houses were damaged.

Sightings have been reported from Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, the Ruhr area and various areas in Rhineland-Palatinate.

“This evening around 7 p.m. in the Güls district of Koblenz, a burnt-out celestial body hit the roof of a residential building. No one was injured,” said the police there. The fire brigade and police are on site. “According to the information we have, there is no longer any danger.”

A small piece of debris, which can probably be attributed to the meteorite, has now been found. The piece of rock, which was several centimeters in size, was found in Koblenz. There, parts of the luminaire tore a foot-sized hole in a roof. Nobody was injured.

When an asteroid hits the Earth’s atmosphere, it often breaks up into many small pieces. Some of them burn up, others end up on earth. These chunks are called meteorites.

The police in Kaiserslautern said that citizens reported a “brightly shining missile with a short glow of fire” or a “flash of fire in the sky”. There was also speculation about a rocket. However, there is “no evidence of a security-related event.”
