Trump had supported Gregory’s rival Jon Maples. In a social media post Monday, he urged voters to go to the polls, saying Maples has the support of “so many of my friends from Palm Beach County.”

Democrats celebrated the victory as the latest sign that voters are turning against Trump and Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections.

“Donald Trump’s own neighbors just sent a crystal clear message: They are angry and ready for change,” said Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin.

Trump cast his vote by mail in Tuesday’s election, and his ballot was counted, according to Palm Beach County voter records. He chose mail-in voting despite publicly criticizing that voting method as a source of voter fraud and urging Congress to restrict the practice.

Trump was a New Yorker for most of his life, but moved his residence and voter registration to Florida during his first term. Mar-a-Lago has become a gathering place for Trump’s friends and allies, as well as business executives and foreign leaders seeking to curry favor with him. As president, he spends many weekends there.

The district was previously represented on the Republican side by Mike Caruso, a Republican who resigned to become Palm Beach County executive. Caruso won in 2024 by 19 percentage points.

Democrats celebrate: ‘Imagine what’s possible in November’

“If Mar-a-Lago is vulnerable, imagine what’s possible in November,” said Heather Williams, chairwoman of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee. She said Tuesday’s election was the 29th seat that Democrats have taken back from Republicans since Trump took office.

“Gas prices are rising, food costs are rising, and families are struggling to make ends meet – it’s clear that voters at the polls are fed up with Republicans,” Williams said.

With almost all of the votes counted, Gregory was ahead by 2.4 percentage points, or 797 votes.

Election winner Gregory grew up north of Palm Beach in Stuart. She owns a fitness business that specializes in pregnant and postpartum women and has never run for political office.

Speaking to MSNOW after her win, she said she was “pretty shocked” and “felt like I wasn’t quite there.”
