Germ killer: You should wash the bath mat before you see stains

If your bath mat doesn’t dry properly, odors and germs will build up over time. That’s why you should clean it often and as thoroughly as possible.

How often or thoroughly you should clean your shower mat depends primarily on the material. Certain materials absorb more water than others, which means they dry more poorly. If you don’t hang the carpet up, it will get wet again and odors and germs can form.

Cleaning shower mats: The material is crucial

So before you even start cleaning, look at the label Laundry care instructions. There you can find out at what temperature you can wash the carpet. This is important because, for example, a rubberized underside cannot withstand temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius. Shower mats made from 100 percent cotton, on the other hand, can be washed in the washing machine at up to 60 degrees.

How often you should clean the bathroom carpet

The online specialist retailer TowelWelt recommends cleaning the bathroom carpet regularly to prevent germs and, in the worst case, mold. However, there is no general answer to the question “how often” because it always depends on how much stress you put on your carpet. You’ll know it’s dirty either by a musty smell or if there are obvious stains.

This statement also supports Detergent manufacturer Persilbut also gives a very specific answer: clean every two to three days, or once a week on household day. However, it is also emphasized that sometimes it is enough to just shake out the bathroom mat or go over it with a vacuum cleaner.

Four tips for cleaning the bathroom carpet

  1. Read the care label. We already mentioned it above, but in addition to the information about the washing temperature, you will also find information about whether your rug can be tumble dried.
  2. For mats made of cotton, one is sufficient Color detergent or for lighter colors, a heavy-duty detergent. If your bath mat is made of synthetic fibers, it is best to use a mild detergent.
  3. It’s best to let the shower mat air dry on a drying rack instead of putting it in the dryer. This protects the fibers as they are not exposed to high temperatures.
  4. Hang the mat up after each shower so that it can dry completely. The edge of the bathtub, for example, is suitable for this.
