He studied psychopaths’ brains and recognized himself

Neuroscientist James Fallon studies the brains of psychopaths and discovers that his own brain shares the same characteristics. However, he never committed a crime himself.

In 2005 he made a surprising discovery: When he Brain scans of violent criminals, he noticed a characteristic pattern: activity was reduced in the areas responsible for empathy and impulse control. “Typical of psychopaths,” Fallon initially thought. James H. Fallon was an American neuroscientist and worked as a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.

During the same period, he also researched Alzheimer’s disease and the corresponding brain structures based on his own family.

Murderer in the family

To his surprise, his own brain scan showed the same pattern as violent criminals and Psychopaths. Later genetic analysis confirmed that he carried several variants linked to aggressive and antisocial behavior. His family history also included violent ancestors, including murderers.

Nevertheless, Fallon was a married family man with friends, stable relationships and no criminal past. He wondered why he wasn’t a criminal.

Died without having committed a crime

The answer was that genes and brain structures do not alone determine the behavior of individuals. The environment, upbringing and social connections also play a crucial role. Fallon found in himself characteristics such as self-centeredness, manipulative tendencies and a low sense of guilt, genetic tendencies that were present but not active. He grew up in a loving, non-violent home and always had people around him who loved him.

Fallon died in 2023 without ever having committed any crimes.
