The animal was discovered on Monday night in the Niendorf district of the Timmendorfer Strand municipality, the police said. The whale is still alive, police forces and the water police want to try to bring the animal back into the sea.

It is believed that the whale is the same animal that has been repeatedly spotted in the Baltic Sea for some time. It was first discovered in the Wismar harbor at the beginning of the month. At that time, emergency services had largely freed the whale from a net in which it had previously been caught.

Last Friday, the same whale was freed from further remains of the net off Travemünde by the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd. The organization assumes that it is a humpback whale.
