It’s not just mowing the lawn that’s forbidden: you’re not allowed to do any work in the garden on Sunday

Gardening on Sundays is a tricky subject. After all, you don’t want to bother anyone, but there’s usually not enough time during the week. Read here what you can and can’t do in the garden.

On holidays or weekends, many people do things that were left behind during the week. In addition, potential helpers only have time on weekends or public holidays. So why not just choose a Sunday or public holiday to spruce up the garden?

Which gardening work you shouldn’t do on Sundays and public holidays

Since the weekend is about relaxing, loud gardening work should not be done out of solidarity with the neighborhood. These include:

  • Working with a leaf blower: This should only be used rarely anyway, as it also stirs up the insects on the ground and kills them. But these insects are very useful for the ecosystem. If you still feel it is necessary, it is best to move this activity to a weekday.
  • Mow the lawn: You should also not mow the lawn on Sunday. The background noise will certainly cause displeasure among many neighbors, which is definitely not in your interest. On Sunday it is important to give yourself and others rest.
  • Spray pesticides: If this is an issue at all in your garden, you should still avoid it on Sundays. This is one of the activities that is relatively complex and requires certain equipment. These are usually relatively loud.
  • Felling trees or trimming hedges are also not permitted, as this requires a certain amount of equipment that causes a significant amount of noise.

You can do this work in the garden on Sundays and public holidays

You are allowed to do garden work that does not cause noise. This includes: cutting out trees, Pulling weedsharvest fruit, Fertilize and distribute decorative items in the garden.

Is it even allowed to work in the garden on Sunday?

Sunday is also legally classified as a general day of rest on which no work should be done. However, this principle is being given less and less importance.

Today people often work on weekends and Sunday as a day of rest is no longer as present as it was 20 years ago. However, care must be taken to ensure that no noisy work is carried out on Sundays. For example, the neighbors must not feel disturbed by work.

And what applies to gardening on holidays?

There are also restrictions on gardening on public holidays, which may vary by country and region. Some countries have similar rules on public holidays as Sundays, while others may have special rules.

In Germany there are no nationwide uniform laws regarding gardening on public holidays. The regulations vary depending on the federal state and even within individual municipalities. This looks different when it comes to noise protection regulations.

However, in most cases the same restrictions apply as on Sundays.

Legal noise protection regulations in Germany

There are various laws and guidelines for noise protection in Germany and the EU, including the Equipment and Machinery Noise Protection Ordinance. These regulations are intended to minimize noise such as that from leaf blowers in the garden to protect the health of residents. People who violate these regulations and cause unnecessary noise can be fined up to 5,000 euros.

Gardening with equipment such as lawn mowers or high-pressure cleaners is prohibited in residential areas all day on Sundays and public holidays and on weekdays from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., unless the equipment is quiet and does not cause any noise nuisance.

Particular attention should be paid to noise-intensive devices such as leaf blowers, which are generally prohibited from operating on Sundays, especially if they do not have the EU eco-label and a guaranteed sound power level, as they can, among other things, cause hearing damage.
