Japan shows jet for electronic warfare for the first time

Japan’s air force has released video of a new electronic warfare fighter jet for the first time. The aircraft, called the Kawasaki EC-2, has a noticeably thick nose.

Inside the various humps that disfigure the jet’s exterior, there is presumably a high level of technical inner workings.

The EC-2 is a converted C-2 transport aircraft. In addition to its large nose, the jet has bulges on its back and tail. Its electronic equipment is intended to disrupt enemy radar transmitters and suppress signals. The EC-2 is intended for the Japanese Air Force replacing the old EC-1, which had been in service for almost 40 years.

EC-2 is expected to be operational next year

According to current status, the country wants to procure up to four EC-2s. The machine seen in the video is already nine years old – it was previously used as a normal transport aircraft. The aircraft is scheduled to enter service in 2027. Further details about the jamming systems remain secret until further notice.
