Security expert Nico Lange spoke about Iran’s strategic goals on ZDF’s “Morgenmagazin” on Monday.
He also commented on the dangers for Europe. Moderator Philip Wortmann asked the expert whether European soldiers could also be drawn into the war.
His answer: “Now you can see that the British have changed their position. They initially didn’t want to make their bases available for this war. Now they’re doing that on the grounds of defensive measures. I don’t know what that means for others. I don’t think the Europeans have the military ability to really do anything against Iran.”
Iran wants to “attack as many as possible”
But that one Iran will try to attack as many as possible. “To bring in as many as possible, so to speak, in the hope that over time they will put pressure on the Americans so that the USA can then get out of this war. From the point of view of the Revolutionary Guards, time is running in their favor.”
The moderator went on to talk about the planned meeting Chancellor Friedrich Merz and US President Donald Trump. When asked how the Chancellor should best act, Lange explained that the central security issue in Europe was Russia’s war against Ukraine. In particular, the focus is on Germany’s strong role in supporting Ukraine.
“We have to admit that we have no influence in the Middle East”
Long: “Germany, but also the other Europeans, have to worry about the question: How do we create a ceasefire and peace in Europe? We have to honestly admit that we have no influence on developments in the Middle East. Maybe we can do the cause some good if we say we care even more about pushing Putin towards peace so that others can do other things.”
