Lieferando couriers: CDU group attacks its own sponsor

Lieferando bicycle couriers demonstrate in front of the CDU party conference for a proposal from the Christian Workers’ Union. Spicy: The platform is also a sponsor of the party conference.

When 25-year-old Gereon Gödderz and his party friends from the “Christian Democratic Workers’ Association” (CDA) went to the Party conference When he came to the Stuttgart exhibition center, he was astonished: “There were Lieferando drivers demonstrating, not against the CDU as usual, but for our own proposal.”

Application concerns CDU sponsor Lieferando

Under number E02, Gödderz’s Rhein-Erft district association requests that the CDU take care of securing precarious bicycle couriers. Spicy: The application concerns one of the sponsoring companies that co-finances the CDU federal party conference in Stuttgart: Lieferando.

The Lieferando platform, which belongs to the Dutch group Takeout heard, was considered an exemplary exception in the app-based delivery services industry for many years: the drivers were permanently employed by Lieferando, i.e. they were subject to social security contributions and were therefore insured. In the summer of 2025, the company announced the Dismissal of 2000 couriers.

The couriers are now supposed to work for subcontractors and this often takes the form of bogus self-employment. “As the CDU, we wanted to send a signal that we care about the needs of the people who provide us with food in all weathers,” says Gereon Gödderz to FOCUS online.

“Prevent precarious employment models”

The application calls for legal regulation for platform-based providers: effective state monitoring of employment relationships, transparent working hours “to prevent bogus self-employment and precarious employment models”.

The CDA argues that this also serves the common good because it ensures that social security contributions and taxes are paid for the drivers.

The current reason for the application is “the decision by Lieferando, as the largest player on the German market, to lay off all permanent drivers in order to, according to its own statements, ‘adapt to the industry standard’.”

However, the motion was no longer accepted for a vote at the party conference today, but was instead referred to the Union parliamentary group for further processing.
