Shortly after 6 p.m., the long-time CDU leader said a friendly farewell to the Chancellor and his wife Charlotte. According to information from the German Press Agency, the reason is that she didn’t want to miss the last direct train home. Merkel lives in Berlin.

The result was ultimately announced more than three hours later than planned – and Merkel was already gone. Merz surprisingly failed in the first round of voting, the meeting was interrupted, and Merkel did not return for the second round of voting.
