CDU federal leader and Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz encouraged his party’s campaigners in Baden-Württemberg in the final stages of the election campaign. The State election on Sunday will be tight, said Merz at the end of the Southwest CDU’s election campaign in Ravensburg. “It will be tighter than we thought.” Some people might think about choosing yellow or even dark blue, he said to the audience. But: “If you vote blue or yellow now, you could wake up green next Monday.”

The Greens and the CDU in Baden-Württemberg are currently roughly on a par in polls and will probably have to form a coalition with each other again. Another alliance does not currently seem mathematically possible – which means that the election will primarily decide whether the Greens or the CDU will be the next Prime Minister.

Hail against Özdemir

The election will decide the successor to Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), who is no longer running after three terms in office. It works for the Greens former Federal Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir into the race, state and parliamentary group leader Manuel Hagel wants to become the new Prime Minister for the CDU.

Merz underlined the importance of the election. This is attracting great attention not only in Baden-Württemberg or Germany, but throughout the entire European Union. He is confident that the CDU will succeed in the election if they join forces.
