Opinion: After the election in Baden-Württemberg, the SPD is doing exactly the wrong thing

The state elections in Baden-Württemberg were a disaster for the SPD. Now the party is making one of the architects of the disaster its parliamentary group leader. So the comrades can’t get back on their feet.

Because Sascha Binder, of all people, was elected as the new parliamentary group leader. He served as Secretary General for responsible for the failed election campaign – and now gets a promotion, so to speak. The Swabian is supposed to replace the resigned parliamentary group leader and gourmet Andreas Stoch, who made many mistakes in the election campaign (the pie affair). Nobody outside the comrade bubble understands this.

The following applies to the SPD: poor performance is rewarded

It’s like this in football: If a team has been losing for years and is ultimately relegated, the coach is changed, and sometimes the manager too. In politics you can’t actually survive a disaster like the one in Stuttgart.

The Jusos are resisting the party’s dead silence

This was also noticed by the Jusos, who usually don’t shine with too much closeness to the people. They are putting their finger on the wound of the party that was in government from 2011 to 2016 speak out clearly against Binderwho certainly doesn’t have any close ties to the party’s younger generation. Wherever the Jusos, who lent a hand in the election campaign and put up posters, are right, they are right.

Friendly fire from the cheeky youngsters breaks the dead silence in the SPD. But does Sascha Binder hear the signals? With this election result, he has disqualified himself for top jobs. He must have a lot of chutzpah to run for this job with this election result, which brings in significantly more money than a normal MP’s diet.

The SPD dwarfs itself

The Binder case illustrates the SPD’s dilemma: They no longer have any high-profile people, at least not in the country. It’s a shame for the remaining SPD MPs in parliament that they don’t dare to make a new start, that no one stands up and says: I want the job, damn it. Because I can do it. A dash of will to power is important in politics.

Politics is also suffering from a shortage of skilled workers

The Jusos uprising is now intended to avert the worst. It is unlikely that Sascha Binder, the SPD’s rubble man, will give in. He can say: I was elected democratically. What an own goal for the proud SPD! The shortage of skilled workers also exists in politics. Because not even the most red-blooded comrades believe that Binder will make a comeback for the SPD.
