Germany is facing a severe weather crisis. Within a short time the temperatures drop by around 10 degrees.
Significantly colder air will prevail again next night. The drop in temperature is particularly pronounced in Cologne: up to 16 degrees will be reached there today, but on Wednesday it will only be around 5 degrees.
Polar air brings a drop in temperature
By the middle of the week, noticeably cooler polar air was flowing into Germany with a cold front. In the following days, the daily maximum temperatures often drop into the single digits, and the nights become increasingly frosty. At the end of the week the cold will reach its peak.
Cold front reaches the mountains with bitter cold
The cold front will take until Thursday to reach the south. The cold snap is strongest in the Alps. Where snow falls and the sky clears at night, the values drop to sometimes extremely low temperatures.
In Garmisch-Partenkirchen -14 degrees can be expected on Saturday morning. In the Allgäu, temperatures of around -10 to -12 degrees are possible.
Winter comeback in the Alps: fresh snow and risk of slippery conditions
In the Alps, the cold front not only brings low temperatures, but also a significant onset of winter. There will be heavy snowfall here again, with 20 to 30 centimeters of fresh snow possible in places. Through this the risk of slippery conditions increases clearly. Drivers should be prepared for slippery roads, especially in the early morning hours and at night.
The frost in the northeast is somewhat less extreme. Although the temperatures here also drop below freezing point, severe frost like in the south is not to be expected there.
Cold phase only lasts a short time
