“Everyone went crazy,” Ora recalled of the media reaction at the time. Now everyone does it. “That was really the best advice because now I’m in my mid-30s and I have a lot of friends who are worried about this,” she said.

Ora left it open when the frozen eggs would be used for her and when she would want to become a mother. She will address that when the time comes, she said.

Nadine Al-Kaisi is a gynecologist specializing in fertility in Munich. She knows all the options available to couples who want to have children and has been supporting them for many years.

“20 percent of women undergoing fertility treatment are over 40 years old, and the trend is increasing,” she reports to FOCUS online. “Family planning is being pushed back more and more due to various factors: the right partner was not yet available, vocational training took longer or you wanted to get a foothold in the job first. These are all understandable reasons that initially postpone the desire to have children.”

Only about 520 eggs can result in a pregnancy

When it comes to older couples’ desire to have children, the expert explains: “Men’s sperm are regenerated and re-formed throughout their lives, so that men remain capable of producing children well into old age. However, it must be said that in men the quality of semen decreases somewhat with increasing age.”

On the other hand: “In women, the eggs are already present during the embryonic period and are no longer formed again, so the number of eggs in the ovary is limited. At the beginning of puberty, there are around 500,000 immature eggs in the ovaries of a healthy girl. From the start of the first menstrual period, the body sends between several 100 to 2,000 immature eggs into the race for one to two potentially fertilizable eggs per cycle “The remaining eggs degenerate and are therefore more or less lost.”

Over the course of a lifetime, there are only around 520 eggs available to potentially lead to pregnancy. “Unfortunately, with increasing age, not only the number of eggs decreases, but also their quality.” This leads to lower chances of pregnancy and a higher number of miscarriages.

Social freezing – insurance for old age?

“With the Possibility of having eggs frozensignificantly younger egg cells are available later and therefore better chances of pregnancy,” explains Al-KAisi, explaining the concept of social freezing. “The decisive factor here is again the age at which the eggs are frozen. The principle applies here: the sooner, the better! The higher chances of success can definitely be expected if women are under 35 years of age when egg retrieval occurs.”

For younger eggs, fewer are needed overall. “Currently, the recommended number of eggs to be frozen is based on the woman’s age, which means that a woman aged 35 should have around 30 to 35 eggs frozen in order to have a good chance of becoming pregnant later.”

The expert explains the high number as follows: Egg cells can be damaged when frozen or thawed, not all of them can be fertilized correctly, and some could have genetic abnormalities that prevent them from developing.

“There are still no final recommendations as to the age at which social freezing makes sense. This should of course be decided individually – but from a genetic point of view and in order to have the best possible protection, it should happen as early as possible.”
