Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has clearly criticized the easing of sanctions against Russia. “We think it is wrong to relax sanctions now, for whatever reason,” said Merz during a visit to Norway.
In Andöya, Merz discussed with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Störe, among other things, ways to support Ukraine in its defensive fight against Russia.
In this context, Merz said: “Unfortunately, Russia continues to show no willingness to negotiate. We will therefore and must continue to increase the pressure on Moscow.” Support for Ukraine will continue. “We will not allow ourselves to be dissuaded or distracted by the Iran war.”
US allows Russia to sell oil for one month
The US Treasury Department had previously granted a license for the sale of Russian crude oil and Russian petroleum products until April 11 due to rising oil prices as a result of the Iran war. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the approval was intended to “increase the global reach of the existing stockpile.”
He also assured that the measure would not provide the Russian government with a “significant financial advantage.” Merz said in Norway about the situation on the global oil market: “There is a price problem at the moment, but not a quantity problem.”
