Skyr Energy Hype: These are three better alternatives

Skyr with energy drink goes viral on TikTok, but experts warn. Why the hype is problematic and which three healthier alternatives really provide energy.

At first glance, the latest TikTok trend seems like an ingenious fitness hack: mix Skyr with an energy drink and shake vigorously. An alleged protein and energy booster is ready. Videos reach millions of views, and in many places retailers even report empty Skyr shelves.

But nutrition experts are critical of the hype. True Skyr, a traditional Icelandic dairy product from cow or sheep’s milk, generally considered nutrient-rich. However, the combination with caffeine-rich energy drinks can be problematic for health, especially for young people.

Skyr Energy Hype: Why It’s Problematic

Skyr itself makes sense from a nutritional perspective as it contains around 10 grams of protein per 100 grams, is low in fat and fills you up well. However, the second component of the trendy drink changes the balance significantly. Three points make mixing with energy drinks problematic:

Energy drinks can contain up to 320 milligrams of caffeine per liter. A 250-milliliter can provides about 80 milligrams of caffeine, about the same as a small cup of coffee.

For healthy adults, this amount is usually considered unproblematic. However, it becomes more critical when several drinks are consumed in a row or when children and young people drink. According to experts, the safe maximum amount for them is a maximum of 3 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day.

In addition, sugar, sweeteners and flavors mask the bitter taste. This makes it easier to drink several cans – much easier than several cups of coffee.

2. Sugar or artificial sweeteners

Many energy drinks contain large amounts of sugar or sweeteners. These mask the bitter taste of caffeine and encourage you to drink more.

3. No real fitness benefit

Caffeine can slightly stimulate your metabolism in the short term. However, studies show that the effect on fat burning or weight loss is relatively small.

The bigger trend behind it: the protein boom

The Skyr hype is part of a larger development. Protein-rich products have been one of the fastest-growing segments in the food trade for years. According to data from market research company NielsenIQ, sales of Skyr in Germany increased by 43 percent in the twelve-month period ending February 2026.

The year before, growth was around 30 percent. More than one in five households now regularly buy Skyr.

The business is lucrative for dairies. Large manufacturers such as Arla or Deutsche Milchkontor are investing in new production lines. At the same time, retailers are currently reporting temporary fluctuations in delivery and availability because demand is increasing faster than production capacity.

Three healthier alternatives to the TikTok drink

If you want to combine energy and protein, you can choose much more sensible options.

1. Skyr with berries and nuts

The combination provides protein, fiber and healthy fats, ensures satiety for longer and contains natural micronutrients.

2. Low-fat quark with mineral water or milk

Nutrition experts recommend this simple trick: stir the low-fat quark until creamy and add a little mineral water or milk. The result is similar to skyr, but often contains even more protein.

3. Coffee instead of energy drink

If you want a pick-me-up, you’re usually better off with classic coffee. It contains significantly less sugar, a controllable amount of caffeine and no artificial additives.

How much protein we really need

The protein boom often gives the impression that more protein is automatically healthier. Nutritionists see this in a more nuanced way.

The German Nutrition Society recommends around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for adults. According to studies, many people in Germany already exceed this requirement, even without special high-protein products.

This means: A balanced diet with dairy products, legumes, nuts or eggs usually covers your needs without any problems. An unhealthy hype drink is not necessary.
