As a spokesman for the state police department said upon request, the incident is related to an ongoing police operation on site. According to initial findings, the operation was directed against a 56-year-old and a 22-year-old man. They are said to have attacked three journalists physically and possibly with irritants. According to information from a dpa reporter, the journalists are a team from “Spiegel TV”. The three people affected were treated in hospital and are slightly injured.

A spokesman for the Mühlhausen public prosecutor’s office confirmed information from the dpa that the two suspects can be assigned to the right-wing extremist scene.

According to police reports, the two suspects were caught during the police operation and temporarily arrested. The police were on duty with forces from the protective and criminal police as well as the riot police. Searches also took place late in the evening.

The investigators were initially unable to provide any reliable information about the exact background to the crime. It is being investigated for bodily harm.

The Mühlhausen regional court found two men guilty of this in 2022, but only sentenced them to minor sentences. The Federal Court of Justice overturned this judgment due to significant legal errors, so that another chamber of the court must now deal with the case again.
