Verdict! Corrupt prosecutor sentenced to eight years in prison

A prosecutor has been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison after dealings with a drug gang. The Hanover regional court found the 40-year-old guilty of bribery and violating official secrecy.

The lawyer had passed on information from investigations to the drug dealers and revealed a raid. It was only in January that the convicted public prosecutor confessed to most of the crimes he was accused of in the stalled proceedings and after a plea agreement from the criminal chamber. The turn of events came as a surprise – until then, the lawyer had always denied the allegations. A 42-year-old boxing trainer accused of aiding and abetting bribery was sentenced to a suspended sentence of one year and ten months.

The prosecution had demanded eight years and six months in prison. The man had caused serious damage to trust in the rule of law, the prosecutor said in his plea. He demanded a year and ten months in prison for the alleged middleman, who had confessed to 7 of 12 alleged crimes – as did his defense attorney. The lawyer’s defense lawyers argued that the sentence should not exceed eight years and two months.

Lawyer is said to have collected 5,000 euros per crime

The public prosecutor was accused of disclosing internal information from investigations in exchange for money between June 2020 and March 2021 and warning an international drug gang about a raid. He claims to have received 2,500 euros for each crime in which he said he sold information to drug dealers – according to the prosecution, it was 5,000 euros for each crime. Legally, as a public prosecutor, he earned around 5,000 euros a month.

There were early indications of a leak in the authorities. An investigation was initiated against the public prosecutor as early as 2022, and his apartment and offices were searched. This procedure was discontinued in October 2023 because the suspicion was not initially confirmed. The proceedings were resumed in June 2024 and the trial began in April 2025.

The prosecutor emphasized that none of the offenses being negotiated involved the import of 16 tons of cocaine and that none of the information passed on was about the record find. In February 2021, 16 tons of cocaine were discovered in the port of Hamburg – a find with a market value of around 448 million euros.
