There was a brief, amusing moment between US President Donald Trump and soccer star Lionel Messi at a White House tribute to Inter Miami CF’s MLS Cup triumph.
Trump welcomed Messi in the East Room of the White House on Thursday evening. There the team, club executives and media representatives were honored for winning the title in the 2025 season.
“This is great. It’s great to be here, champions. We like champions. We like winners, and we have a lot of them here today, too many to list,” Trump said at the start.
Trump’s son is a Messi and Ronaldo fan
Then he spoke directly about Messi, saying his son was a big fan. Suddenly he mentioned his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. “He (Trump’s son) is a big football fan, but above all he is a big fan of you and of a gentleman named Ronaldo.”
Messi responded with a smile. Trump added: “Cristiano is great. You are great. Great champions. Some great athletes are in this sport.” Inter Miami had that MLS Cup won the first championship title in club history with a 3-1 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on December 6th in Fort Lauderdale.
